PostSubject: Hugh's Fish Fight   Thu Jan 06, 2011 9:38 am

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall embarks on a new campaign to save our fishies in this three-part special for Channel 4's Fish Season.
Hoping to raise awareness of diminishing fish stocks, Hugh works to find a solution to this global problem. Scientists believe that if action isn't taken soon, certain sea favourites may be non-existent for future generations.

Focusing on the three species most widely consumed in the UK – cod, salmon and tuna – Hugh leaves no stone unturned in his mission to understand what is happening to the British fishing industry. In the process he is horrified to learn that up to half of all fish caught in the North Sea are thrown back dead. Hugh also investigates the supermarkets' claims - what exactly does 'protecting the marine environment' mean?

Determined to help conserve fish stocks, Hugh launches an online campaign which you can all sign up to, and takes on the supermarkets, the politicians, and the public in one almighty Fish Fight. Go to fishfight.net to get involved!

Watch Hugh's Fish Fight at 9pm on Tuesday 11, Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 January, on Channel 4

I still have my doubts about the programme, encouraging the target of other species?? How do they know about the detrimental effects it will have on them, are they fast growing prolific breeders like cod ??? Can they handle commercial pressure directed at them?
We should eat more mackerel? what about the hundreds of thousands of tonnes that are already being netted, most of which is exported?
I think the programme has flaws, but most of it is spot on, hitting home with the general public.
I think it will have a more knock on effect than the documentary "End Of The Line" because of its celeb status.

Over 300 thousand signed the petition already !

A SET NUMBER OF DAYS AT SEA LANDING EVERYTHING HAS TO BE BETTER THAN JUST TIPPING PERFECTLY GOOD FISH DEAD INTO THE SEA, ALTHOUGH I HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE IS A LOT OF " BLACK FISH " LANDED SOLD OF THE BOOKS FOR CASH.

I don't blame the guys, probably earning more money landing "black fish", must be heartbreaking having to waste all that prime cod.
Maybe it should all be line caught, with my rod! Very Happy
No by-catch, except for DOGFISH!! Up Yours

Whilst i have joined the petition i must admit, like 3legs, i too have my reservations. My stomach turns every time i hear Hugh going on about how we should all eat "sustainable" pollack and mackeral. As we boat anglers know, pollack are a very localised fish caught from specific marks/grounds such as wrecks and reefs and i'm pretty sure it wouldn't take much to effect the stocks of these areas. Plus, by calling them sustainable it may encourage the knobheads to use them for pot baits.
As for mackeral, although they seem to hang around for longer, i'm convinced there are a lot less in our waters than even just 6 or 7 years ago. Then again I could just be getting useless at catching them Laughing

I thought things were a bit brief in the programme in regards how these things are caught. Fair enough, Dabs, Gurnards, Whitings and other bits are getting chucked back as BY-Catch. So they might as well be brought in for eating (good eating as well) more often.
But Likes of the Callig, there is no explanation on how they sustainably fish for them, same with mackerel. I am surprised he didn't look into the mass of mackerel being netted already by million pound super trawlers!

I watched hestons fishy feast last night. He said at the start, that in 50 years time fish stocks could be totally depleted. So we should eat alternative fish to stop it from happening????
The way I see, we are doing this anyway. Once one is gone we move onto another and so on and on it will go until everything has gone anyway.
I think they are just telling people what they want to hear. If you seen it last night, he was saying that wolf fish could be a great alternative for cod. Yes it tastes nice, but you tell me that they are a shouling, fast growing fish abundant everywhere, I might think they are a good alternative.
All the snobs will be demanding wolf fish, which at a guess I think would be much like Ballen, very localised, slow growing and once there taken from an area they would struggle to recover!

I just hope they have sustainable back up for all there Ideas!

Peter you will have to take some more lessons off micheal to sort out your Mackie catching skills ,after the other night i think he is trying to become the new doggie king and knock Cam off his throne.
